The GOAL-Trauma Study: Global Outcomes After Laparotomy for Trauma

Around 1 in 10 patients die following a trauma laparotomy

The GOAL-Trauma Study was conducted in 187 hospitals from 51 countries, comparing patient pathways, management, and outcomes across settings worldwide for those undergoing a trauma laparotomy

Patients in the lower resource settings were shown to be three times more likely to die, however those in the higher resource settings presented to hospital more injured

“There is a survival gap that begins before patients even reach the operating theatre…this may be because the most seriously injured die before they can access life-saving care, or because limitations in diagnosis mean their injuries go undetected”
